Special Assembly Tip

The rod is shown in red and is cable-tied to the underside of the top cage.

Need it COVERED?

We don't have any images for this, but here is a description about the cover.

The top of the cage needs a regular 2x4 Flip-Fold Cover. HOWEVER, keep in mind that you have to open the cover at least part way in order to fold the front wall down with the swing grids. The cover needs that front grid wall to rest the top front of the cover on.

For the Front Vertical Gap, You need 7 more Tall Half Grid and some Zip Ties. You will overlap 3 tall grids across the 4 tall grids in the exact same fashion as the regular cover's instructions that you'll receive. You will attach that overlapped set of cable-tied grids to the floor grids of the cage. The wall should hinge/drop down by using a little loosely zip-tied attachment like a hinge.

A couple of more CLIPS. And you'll need a couple of more clips to secure the end of the walls to the cage drop down cover.

Unfortunately not. The ramp would have to be very long and would require a lot of reinforcing. You'd also have to cut a hole in the upper level for the ramp to pass through. You might be able to use two ramps and create a landing half way down to reduce the slope of a single long ramp. If you're handy, you might find some of our materials useful, but we haven't ventured into that type of ramp yet. This stacked cage is really just for separated pairs. You might want to check out our "Piggy In Paint" Cagetopia Creation. It's a modified stacked cage that you can safely add a ramp from the upper cage to the lower cage. :) https://www.cagetopia.com/piggy-in-paint

Is it possible to quickly purchase everything instead of going to each one and checking it out? I feel it would be easier to have the option of adding everything the way it was customized itself. It would be more convenient.

Hi Madison, We feel your pain. I've tried to make this happen, but the problem is, most component items have options associated with them, like color, size, etc, that make it complicated. The ecommerce platform that we are on is already one of the few that supports our complicated products and that extra level of complexity to bundle items that still need features and options selected just adds another level of complexity that they do not support. We'll continue to explore ways to make it happen, but for the near future, it's the best we can do. So sorry!

I am absolutely in love with this cage design, my question is whether it would be possible to add something like the lookout lounge to the bottom cage, and maybe add a second level to the cage on the top. I don't have guinea pigs right now, but am planning to get some during the summer, and this will be absolutely beautiful to have as a cage for them.

Hi Rhiamae, Well, if you are new to guinea pigs, I strongly suggest starting out with a cage that is appropriate for two guinea pigs and is also easy to clean. This cage layout, while it looks really cool, is not an ideal setup. It is intended for people who absolutely do not have any room for two separate pairs (3 will be crowded) in unstacked cages. You have to be on your knees and sometimes ducking your head into the lower level for thorough cleanings. Depending on the cage location in your home, the bottom cage will likely have less natural light. If stacked cages can be avoided, they should be. It is much easier to take care of guinea pigs at normal table-level height and then that gives you much more ability to get creative in adding levels and runs for them. For an ideal setup for two guinea pigs, I like the Roomie Zoomie cage we show here (https://www.cagetopia.com/roomie-zoomie) WITH the addition of a Lookout Lounge on the other end to be one of the most ideal setups that is super EASY-to-CLEAN in the bargain. You can put it on a cage stand if that is part of the appeal. Keeping the cage as easy to clean as possible should be your number one goal after making sure the pigs are happy because in the long run, that is what will make or break your long-term happiness with keeping guinea pigs. :) All that said, to answer your question, the Lookout Lounge as we currently sell it, would not work. But, the original prototype that I did for it (which I still have) would, but it requires using our Door Grids and our slightly more-expensive-to-ship Shelf Grids rather than the current configuration, which is why we reconfigured it a bit. So, doable, but would require providing that solution to you and you'd have to order the parts separately. And no, you really can't add an upper level to the top cage, as the support grids with the needed connectors wouldn't be there (due to the drop-down wall). And it will make the cage too high for access and cleaning. Hope that helps clarify what's possible and why. :)

Hello, I was wondering of this can somehow be done with one level being 2x4 and one level being 2x5. I have three boys and one doesn't get along with the other two, but he doesn't necessarily need the space of a 2x5.

Well, not really in a directly stacked fashion. While it might be possible with some super creative structure, it's untested and we wouldn't be able to recommend a setup for that that would for sure work.

It's pretty tall. Each regular grid level is about 15" (allowing room for the connectors). Two regular grids, stacked puts it at table height of 30", then add a grid and a half. So, 45" + about 8-9", so the top of the construction is at about 53-54". You'd have to be pretty tall or use a step ladder to comfortably reach inside the top level. OR you could lose the bins on the bottom and still have a stand by using the half grids for a stand instead of a full grid. That would drop it back down a normal height as if the cage were sitting on a table.

Bottomline, no, sorry. You'd never be able to reach into the back corners, but you cannot construct it on the bottom with dropdown walls (needed for cleaning) and on the top, you'd need a ladder to get to it. Too tall, too much height for the grid levels to be safe.

We don't advise it. You really need space between levels for access, cleaning and light. Going three high starts to be more wobbly and really difficult to reach for access.

Yes, sure, just keep in mind that the fold-down grids on the bottom cage won't have as much clearance to open all the way down; they will be at an angle in front of you as the floor will be partially in the way. I would make that bottom row of cage grids the half grids instead and make it like that fold-down wall in the "Let It Snow" cage.

I love this setup and am wanting to change a couple of my existing cage setups to this style. I have one question for clarification please. Does the front of both the top and bottom cages fold down with this list of items to purchase? I think from the picture (and hope) that both fold down but I only see notes on the list about the two rods being for the underside of the top. Can you please confirm? I want to order double if the list is only for the one cage to fold down so I can be sure I can fold down both. I hope that makes sense. Thank you!!

Right, they both fold down -- the key ingredient being the "8" swing grids -- 4 for the top, 4 for the bottom. Support rods are only needed for the top level to help provide support from sagging in the middle. The bottom level does not need a support rod because it's sitting easily on the full grid cage stand floor, so no problem at all with support or sagging on the bottom level. :)

Please notice the white ZIP TIES on the last image in the article that connects the Swing Grid panels together. They are zip-tied together so that they move as a unit. A binder clip is used to secure it in place on each end.

Depending on your perspective, abilities, and experience with grids, yes, it's complicated. It's four levels of different designs. How could it not be, really? It's furniture for multiple guinea pig groups. We state this upfront in the description: "Note that this is not for the novice cage builder. It's a time-consuming project as any 4-level configuration would be, but if you have any questions, we're always here to help and provide additional images." Why the frownie face and the surprise? If you have the space available, you can go with "simple," single-level cages. If you don't that space available, then stacking cages is a compromise solution that takes some ingenuity (we provide that) and some additional construction effort on your end. :) It's not that hard, it's just a little more time-consuming to construct than a simple cage.

I am thinking of adding the Piggy in Paint to my 2 x 5 with the modifications. Just curious if you think it is okay to have the bottom level cage directly on the floor (there is no breeze). My current 2x5 is stacked on bottom grids, just like the Piggy in Paint creation. ,

I bought & made this set-up...I love it and my piggies are happy too. I want to do this with a 2x6 and wondering how to get enough support underneath with extension rods for the 90" across. Would using 2 sets of the Extendable Long Ultra Rods and overlapping them underneath work? I even wondered if I could place the rods in the other direction for support underneath like a Wonder Bar?

I want to re-create this cage but I'm not sure where the two rods need to be placed. The drawing shows one but doesn't show the second rod....Is it totally necessary? Reading the comments someone mentions three rods for support so I'm a little confuse how many and where to place them exactly. Thanks

The last image in the article shows the placement. It just needs to be underneath the upper level and tightly ziptied to prevent the floor from sagging in the middle. And it also helps prevent it from bouncing when they run around on it. For that it's needed and should be done. It also just makes things stronger and tighter. Hello! I have had my eye on this set up for awhile and got two more 2X4 cages and had one already. It is alright to have a third cage on the bottom rather than the cubies? If so, what should I buy to accommodate for this?

Sorry, no. You need the spacer grid-level between levels or you won't be able to clean the cage and it will be far too dark enclosed for the guinea pigs. Please see the article about Stacking Cages on the Articles menu. It talks about levels and heights and such and what's needed. Thanks.

Are the rods supposed to be hanging out about 2-3 inches on both sides? Or are they supposed to be a tighter fit closer to the size of the cage?

No, it doesn't have to stick out very far. Just enough so that you can secure the rod to the perpendicular end walls. That's where you get the extra support. Just enough to clear that and be secure is all you need -- a discrete distance. But it's up to you.

I should have said that for some reason my rods are hanging out on both ends about 2-3 inches and I can’t make it smaller than that. I have a 2 x 4 cage and purchased what was recommended which was the one 32” rod and the extendable long rod and when both of the smaller rods are in each end they hang out quite a bit unfortunately for me.

Hi Monique, The Lookout Lounge needs the structural support of the full grid on the long walls. The only other way is if you have the full regular, non-swing down grid on the front corner and use short or tall half grids for the rest of the front and then do partial swing down half grids along the front. Hi Keona, Please keep in mind this is an advanced build and not recommended for a first-time C&C cage. It can be good to walk before you run if you can. All of the parts and components are listed and you have to put them in your cart to get a final price. You just would not include the bins in your cart. The instructions to cover the front are generally noted under "Need It Covered" section. It's noted for the 2x4 size. You'd have to extrapolate for a different size. And you'd need to put those items in your cart to get a final price. This is an expensive build due to the many parts and components needed to achieve a good result of space and ease-of-cleaning and access. Please email if you have more specific questions. Thanks!!
